Greater Los Angeles guide

Best Hair Extensions in Los Angeles: Top 10

By LDM Hair, West Hollywood · Reviewed

Hair extensions in Greater Los Angeles range from tape-ins and wefts to keratin bonds and I-tips, and each method has different installation, maintenance and removal needs. This guide lists ten providers, the methods each one publishes, and the questions to ask so your quote covers the full cost of the hair, installation and upkeep.

A quick note on terms: keratin-bond extensions attach extension hair with a keratin-based bond. They are a different service from keratin smoothing, which is a treatment to reduce frizz.

Extension methods in plain terms

Tape-in
Thin wefts sandwiched onto small sections of your hair with adhesive tape. Re-taped and moved up periodically.
Keratin bond / K-tip
Small strands bonded to your hair with a keratin-based bond applied with heat. Removed with a solvent.
I-tip
Individual strands attached with small beads or cylinders, without glue or heat.
Beaded or hand-tied weft
A row of beads anchors a weft of hair. Moved up as your hair grows.
Clip-in
Temporary wefts you put in and take out yourself.

Which method suits you depends on your hair and routine. Ask each provider to explain their recommendation.

Questions to ask before you book extensions

  1. Hair sourcing. What type of hair is used, where does it come from, and is it included in the quote or bought separately?
  2. Method fit. Which method do they recommend for your hair density and lifestyle, and why?
  3. Blending. Is color matching or a blending cut included?
  4. Maintenance. How often are move-ups or re-tapes needed, and what does each one cost?
  5. Removal. How is removal done, and is it priced separately?
  6. Aftercare. Which products and tools to use and avoid, and how to sleep, swim and work out with extensions in.
  7. The complete quote. Ask for one written number covering hair, installation, blending and the first maintenance visit, so you can compare providers fairly.

Extension hair cost and installation labor are often quoted separately. When comparing providers, compare the full first-year cost, not just the install price.
